I enjoyed Slaughter's Tolliver/Linton series but I have to admit – I was getting a little tired. There was a charming interlude (Martin Misunderstood) but I felt that the original characters had entertained me as far as they could.
Then I read Fractured. New characters. New relationships. And for me: new interest.
The story starts with every parent's nightmare: a mother comes home unexpectedly one afternoon to find her daughter dead, a man standing over her with a bloody knife. Add a investigative misjudgement which threatens another girl's life and political and financial interference that sways the course of the enquiry and you have a recipe for a tale that grips until the very last page.
Slaughter's introduction of a new partnership bodes well for my continued interest: without ruining the story for you I can say that Special Agent Will Trent has a fascinating secret, detective Faith Mitchell is more than equal in complex characterisation and I look forward to following them further.
